AAMI - Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation
First Name:

Last Name:

Email Address:

A nonprofit organization founded in 1967, the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) members strive to increase the understanding and beneficial use of medical instrumentation.

As an organization, AAMI helps members:

  • contain costs
  • keep informed of new technology and policy developments
  • add value in healthcare organizations
  • improve professional skills and enhance patient care

AAMI provides a unique and critical forum for clinical and biomedical engineers and technicians, physicians, nurses, and hospital administrators, to educators and researchers, manufacturers, distributors, government representatives and other healthcare professionals with an interest in medical devices. These diverse groups have been instrumental in making AAMI the leading source of medical device standards.

AAMI standards are a primary source of consensus and timely information on medical instrumentation and technology. AAMI standards are applicable for the industry, healthcare professionals, and the government for national and international standards.

The AAMI standards program is based on the philosophy that

  1. Requirements should be performance-based; design standards should be avoided as they can limit innovation and restrict competition.
  2. National standards developing organizations (SDO) should work through accepted international bodies such as ISO, IEC and ITU whenever possible to avoid duplication of effort and standards.
  3. Standards are not the basis of competition; they are the basis of “good practices” in terms of patient safety and the basis of harmonizing marketplace, regulatory and other requirements to enhance the use of technology for the welfare of patients.

IHS is an authorized reseller of AAMI standards. Purchasing AAMI standards through IHS assures that you and your organization have access to the set of standards you need to successfully compete in international health care and medical device markets. AAMI publications are used primarily by professionals in research/teaching facilities, government agencies, manufacturers, and testing facilities with an interest in medical devices and equipment.
