ASME B31.3 - Process Piping

Date of Issuance: April 30, 2002
Mandatory Date: Oct. 30, 2002
This edition was approved by the American National Standards Institute and designated ASME B31.3-2002 on Feb. 14, 2002.

Scope
Rules for the Process Piping Code Section B31.3 have been developed considering piping typically found in petroleum refineries; chemical, pharmaceutical, textile, paper, semiconductor, and cryogenic plants; and related processing plants and terminals.

Content and Coverage
(a) This Code prescribes requirements for materials and components, design, fabrication, assembly, erection, examination, inspection, and testing of piping.

(b) This Code applies to piping for all fluids, including:

  1. raw, intermediate, and finished chemicals;
  2. petroleum products;
  3. gas, steam, air, and water;
  4. fluidized solids;
  5. refrigerants; and
  6. cryogenic fluids.

(c) See Fig. 300.1.1 for a diagram illustrating the application of B31.3 piping at equipment. The joint connecting piping to equipment is within the scope of B31.3.

Packaged Equipment Piping. Also included within the scope of this Code is piping which interconnects pieces or stages within a packaged equipment assembly.

Exclusions. This Code excludes the following:

  1. piping systems designed for internal gage pressures at or above zero but less than 105 kPa (15 psi), provided the fluid handled is nonflammable, nontoxic, and not damaging to human tissue as defined in 300.2, and its design temperature is from -29 C (-20 F) through 186 C (366 F);
  2. power boilers in accordance with BPV Code Section I and boiler external piping which is required to conform to B31.1;
  3. tubes, tube headers, crossovers, and manifolds of fired heaters, which are internal to the heater enclosure; and
  4. pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, and other fluid handling or processing equipment, including internal piping and connections for external piping.

IHS and ASME

IHS has been a leading distributor of ASME standards and codes since 1974. In 1989, IHS and ASME first produced a full-text, electronically searchable, hyperlinked version of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code on CD-ROM. The 2004 edition is now available.

IHS Provides ASME Standards in the Following Formats
  • Internet - The IHS Specs & Standards subscription service provides unlimited, immediate access to complete collections of industry, international/national standards and military specifications.

  • Intranet or Extranet - Documents reside on corporate internal networks (depending on individual licensing agreements) for quick desktop access, retrieval and sharing.

  • CD-ROM or DVD - For locations with strict security or where online communications is an issue.

  • Individual Standards - Individual standards documents may be ordered from IHS Standards Store in hardcopy format. IHS subscription customers may purchase individual Portable Document Format (PDF) documents.

The IHS ASME Service

The ASME Service from IHS offers users ASME Standards or ASME Performance Test Codes by subscription. A combined ASME Standards and Performance Codes subscription is also available.

  • The IHS ASME Standards Service
    Includes all ASME standards, covering compressors, controls, dimensions, drawings and terminology, elevators and escalators, fasteners, measurement, food/beverage and drug equipment, gas turbines, gauges, keys, lifting devices, lubrication, materials handling devices, nuclear, offshore, piping, plumbing, pressure vessels, pumps, screw threads, steel stacks, storage tanks, surface quality, tools, transmissions, turbines, valves, fittings, flanges, gaskets and window cleaning.

  • ASME Performance Test Codes
    Includes all ASME Performance Test Codes and supplements, addressing general instructions, definitions, values, diesel and burner fuels, solid and gaseous fuels, steam generating units, coal pulverizers, air heaters, reciprocating steam and steam turbines, pumps, heaters, measurements, pressure control systems, power plants, linear measurements, density determinations, safety and relief valves, incinerators, etc.

ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code

The ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) details the latest rules of safety for the design, fabrication, maintenance and inspection of boilers and pressure vessels, power producing machines (and associated subsystems) and nuclear power plant components.

The 2004 edition of the ASME BPVC contains thousands of pages of new code, standards and figures. Section II-D is now separated into Customary and Metric volumes. New this year, Section XII, Rules for Construction, and Continued Service of Transport Tanks, may soon be referenced by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Drawing Requirements Manual

The Drawing Requirements Manual (DRM) is a reference for engineers, designers, drafters, machinists and quality control inspectors for preparing engineering drawings for industry, while meeting the requirements of the U.S. Department of Defense. The new 10th Edition DRM includes an introduction section describing specifications and standards that have changed between 1995 and 2000 with current status - new, revised, superseded or canceled.

The DRM and the ASME Y14 Series of drawing and drafting standards are available separately and combined from IHS on CD-ROM.
