In this collection, ASME provides “elevator” standards for the repair, testing, maintenance, operation, and alteration of existing elevators, escalators, moving walks, material lifts, and dumbwaiters with automatic transfer devices. ASME engineering-related codes are also available for the design, construction, installation, operation, and inspection of new elevators, escalators, moving walks, and similar automatic transfer devices.

These ASME codes are guides unless local jurisdictions adopt them as law or regulation. Local authorities may also have engineering standards or safety requirements in place in addition to ASME standards. Therefore, contacting local inspectors or regulators regarding required codes and standards is recommended.

This collection also includes ASME codes and standards related to inspection and application of codes retroactively for existing elevators, moving walks, and escalators. ASME A17.3 is also intended as a standard reference of safety requirements for the guidance of architects, engineers, insurance companies, manufacturers, and contractors, and as a standard of safety practices for building owners and managers of structures where existing elevator equipment covered in the scope of the Code is used. The purpose of this Code is to establish minimum requirements that will provide a reasonable degree of safety for the general public.

These ASME codes are available for engineers and other technical professionals to purchase in hardcopy, electronic form, or through an online subscription. Online subscriptions and individual document purchasing are both described below. Complete the form on this page to speak with a customer service representative regarding collection pricing.
