ASTM STP 1143 Low Temperature Lubricant Rheology Measurement and Relevance to Engine Operation

ASTM STP 1143 is offered by IHS as part of an online subscription to the Special Technical Publications Library.

You may also purchase this publication alone from the IHS Standards Store.

Rhodes, RB

This publication contains papers presented at the Low Temperature Lubricant Rheology Measurement and Relevance to Engine Operation symposium. The symposium was sponsored by ASTM Committee D-2 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants and its Subcommittee D02.07 on Lubricant Flow Properties in December, 1991.

The symposium was undertaken to accomplish three things.

  1. Offer a chronology of developments regarding the low-temperature rheological techniques and specifications that apply to the low-temperature cranking and pumping characteristics of engine oils.
  2. Focus on the technological changes that have occurred since the completion of the last round of low-temperature engine and bench test studies.
  3. Bring to light new information that would help determine whether the cranking, starting, and pumping needs of present-day engines are adequately served.

Specific topics addressed by papers in this collection include:

  • historical perspective
  • test methods
  • oil rheology
  • engine oil
  • borderline pumping temperature
  • gasoline engines
  • critical oiling locations
  • cold cranking
  • startability
  • diesel engine
  • cold cranking simulator
  • SAE J300
  • shear stress
  • shear rate
  • viscosity
  • differential scanning calorimetry
  • GC-simulated distillation
  • Brookfield viscometer
  • Ravenfield CS viscometer
  • basestock manufacture
  • dewaxing
  • pumpability
  • refinery unit operations
  • wax compositions
  • pour point
