ASTM International Committee F13 on Safety and Traction for Footwear served as sponsor for the Symposium on Metrology of Pedestrian Locomotion and Slip Resistance held in June, 2001. This STP contains ten of the papers presented at the symposium.

  • The ten papers fall into three broad categories: (1) Biomechanics of Ambulation,
  • (2) Walkway-Safety Tribometry, and (3) Walkway-Safety Standards Development.
  • Specific topics covered by the papers include:
  • relationship between age and pedestrian ambulation,
  • shoe-bottom wear and its effect upon friction demand
  • test-foot standardization
  • methods for measuring friction
  • tribometric testing of wet surfaces
  • development of walkway-safety standards
  • slip resistance standards
  • variable inclinable stepmeter

Researchers have estimated the cost of slip-precipitated accidents in the billions of dollars per year. Given that here is evidence that slip accidents may be underreported work in this area is expected to increase. This STP provides critical information to those working to increase their understanding of slip resistance measurements, standards, and criteria, and their application to pedestrian locomotion.
