The papers published in this special technical publication (STP) were presented at a symposium entitled Building Facade Maintenance, Repair and Inspection, held on October 12-13, 2002. The ASTM International Committee E06 on performance of buildings sponsored the symposium as a parallel effort with the final development of ASTM's Standard E 2270, “Standard Practice for Periodic Inspection of Building Facades for Unsafe Conditions,” which received final approval in the spring of 2003.
The papers contained in this publication provide insight with regard to four major areas:
- Purpose and Background to Facade Ordinances
- Addressing Historic Buildings
- Investigation and Data Collection Techniques
- Material and Repair Techniques
- Specific topics addressed by papers in this STP include:
- facade maintenance
- industrial rope access
- methods of collecting and presenting information derived from facade inspections
- in-situ strain relief testing
- stone facade inspection and assessment
- marble facades
- hydrogen-assisted stress-corrosion cracking
- glass facade assessment
- concrete facades
- temporary stabilization
- emergency repairs for historic facades
- facade inspection ordinance
- watertight integrity of building facades
- inspection of natural stone building facades
The information in this STP is useful for architects, engineers, public and private institutional facility owners, and contractors.
