Joining and Repair of Composite Structures

Kim H

This STP contains papers from the Symposium on Joining and Repair of Composite Structures, which took place in March of 2003, under sponsorship of the ASTM Committee D30.

The objective of the symposium was to provide a forum for interaction and synergy between the design, analysis, testing, and fabrication of structural joint and attachment configurations. The challenges faced in repair approaches needed to maintain composite and metallic structures add to the complexities of joining composites. The papers contained in this publication address a spectrum of topics relevant to the joining of composites. Papers focus on design, analysis, and testing. These are organized by the general topic categories of adhesively bonded attachments, repair, and bolted attachments.

Specific topics addressed by papers in this collection include:

  • general analysis of adhesive joints based on the sublaminate analysis methodology
  • nonlinear adhesive constitutive behavior
  • strength measurement of lap joints loaded under in plane shear
  • double-strap joint design configuration
  • thick section thermoplastics
  • composite-to-titanium for a marine application
  • bondable peel ply for bonding fiberglass skins to a polyamide honeycomb core
  • dynamic response of adhesive joints formed in scarf repairs
  • repair of thick steel structures
  • Strain Invariant Failure Theory (SIFT)
  • bolted joint failure prediction
  • obtaining filled hole and bolted attachment allowables
