Performance and Durability of the Window-Wall Interface

Hardman BG

This ASTM publication contains papers presented at the ASTM E06 symposium on the performance and durability of the window-wall interface in 2004. The purpose of the symposium was to begin to compile a body of window-wall interface information not previously available through the private sector.

The papers in this STP are useful to architects, specification writers, installers, and building owners. The papers address testing and techniques that will assist readers writing specifications, creating or interpreting standards, evaluating materials for product selection, or recommending changes to the building codes. The papers present viewpoints and testimony from the private sector, which includes new research, exhaustive testing, and the creation of installation standards that attempt to identify installation methods and construction sequencing, to integrate a variety of fenestration products into a variety of wall claddings.

Issues regarding window-wall interfaces identified in these papers include

  • integration of windows or doors with their related interfaces
  • weather, exposure, job site conditions
  • installation method changes resulting from changes in materials
  • compatibility or incompatibility of adjacent and integrated materials
  • lack of coordination between the separate trades who work on the window-wall interface area
  • roles of architects, builders, and the various trades responsible for installation

The papers available in this STP provide information regarding

  • flashing performance
  • moisture intrusion
  • window installation
  • water resistive barriers (WRBs)
  • sealants including polyurethane foam sealant, aerosol foam sealant, expandable polyurethane sealant,
  • air barrier foam sealant, window and door foam sealant, low pressure-build foam sealant
  • climate loads
  • watertightness information such as properties of water resistance and water vapor permeance and comparison of the water resistance of WRBs measured by both standard methods and by a small-scale water spray test
  • installation methods for self-adhering flashings
  • affect of installation details on the interior surface temperature of metal window frames, and indirectly, the likelihood of surface condensation on the frame
  • condensation
  • THERM program

Purchase this ASTM STP for access to industry information regarding fenestration materials testing, methods, and performance that will improve your ability to design, specify, and install WRBs, flashing, and sealants.
