AWS - American Welding Society Collections

American Welding Society (AWS) codes, recommended practices, guides and specifications address all aspects of welding, including construction and aerospace applications, structural steel, sheet steel, aluminum and weld inspector certification.

AWS Collections:

Online Access - Subscribers get secure online access to search, view, bookmark, track, and print documents according to the license agreement. Online documents are updated daily. Multiple users can share a single license. You also get access to IHS Standards bibliographic data – more than 1 Million documents.

Individual Documents - IHS sell individual documents through the IHS Store in electronic or hard copy formats. Statistics show that 1 out of every 5 people who purchase individual documents would benefit from an online subscription.  You should consider a collection over individual document purchases if your company buys more than $3,000 in standards per year.

Selected AWS Standards Categories Available From IHS

AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code - Steel - The AWS flagship standard, the Structural Welding Code - Steel, is the world's premier reference for structural steel welding. New material in the latest addition of the standard addresses:

  • U.S. and metric measurements.
  • Responsibilities of personnel.
  • Revised design of welded connections.
  • Limits of fillet weld length.
  • Definition of T-joints.
  • Fatigue limits of weld and joint types.
  • Data on through-thickness base metal loading.
  • Clarification on matching filler metals to construction materials.
  • Guidelines for Charpy V-notch testing.
  • Commentary on ultrasonic testing.

2008 AWS - D1.1/D1.1M Structural Welding Code

Construction - Bridge Welding Code - Covers the welding requirements for AASHTO welded highway bridges made from carbon and low-alloy constructional steels. Contains dimensions in metric SI Units and U.S Customary Units. Sections 1 through 7 constitute a body of rules for the regulation of welding and in steel construction. Section 9 of the previous edition has had its provisions distributed throughout this edition. Section 12 contains the requirements for fabricating fracture critical members.

AASHTO/AWS D1.5M/D1.1 Bridge Welding Code

Aerospace - AWS D17.1 - Provides general requirements for currently recognized aerospace fusion welding processes and materials. Additionally, the spec provides for the application of new materials and new welding processes. Covers design of welded connections, welding performance and procedure qualification, fabrication, inspection, repair of existing structures and welding of nonflight hardware.

Sheet Steel - Defines the allowable capacities used in sheet steel applications in which the transfer of calculated load occurs. Addresses the welding of steel decks, panels, storage racks, and stud and joist framing members as well as the consistently sound welding of joints. Includes allowable load capacities, details of welded connections, pre-qualification of WPSs, qualification, inspection and stud welding.

Aluminum - Rules and regulations necessary for welding structural aluminum using the gas metal arc, gas tungsten arc and plasma arc welding processes, as well as stud welding and plasma arc gouging, in dynamically loaded or statically loaded nontubular structures and tubular structures. Includes sections on fabrication, qualification of WPSs, and personnel and inspection.

Certification Manual for Welding Inspectors - Covers the welding inspector, responsibilities, standards, joint geometry and terminology, symbols, weldability, destructive testing, procedure and welder qualification, welding/brazing/cutting processes, discontinuities, NDE and inspector reports.
