European Harmonized Standards

Much of the standardization work within Europe is directed towards harmonized European standards, prefixed EN.  Each Member Country of the European standards bodies is obliged to adopt the EN standard as a national standard with the national standard prefix preceding “EN”, and withdraw any conflicting national standard.  This harmonization means that there is a “common standard” applied across Europe.  Many harmonized European standards support the EU New Approach Directives.

IHS offers standards from these International organizations and others

British Standards Institution (BSI)

International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)

European Committee for Standardization (CEN)

European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC)

European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI)

ASTM International (ASTM)

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL)
