Assure Boiler Pressure Vessel Safety by Inspection
The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (NBBI) promotes protection of life and property through uniformity in the construction, installation, repair, maintenance, and inspection of pressure equipment. Since 1919, NBBI members have provided oversight regarding adherence to laws, rules, and regulations associated with boilers and pressures vessels.
The National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) serves as one of the primary tools for compliance assurance, The NBIC is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard developed by NBBI in accordance with rigorous procedures (NB-240 National Board Inspection Code Procedures). This ANSI standard has been adopted by most states and cities in the United States, all Canadian provinces, and US regulatory agencies including the US Department of Transportation. It is the only standard recognized worldwide for the in-service inspection of repairs and alterations of boilers and pressure vessels (BPV).
The NBIC was first published in 1946 as a guide for chief inspectors. The code continues to provide boiler inspectors with critical information for performing their inspection functions. In addition to developing and maintaining the NBIC, NBBI members work to:
- offer comprehensive training programs in the form of continuing education for both inspectors and pressure equipment professionals
- qualify inspectors through a comprehensive examination administered by the National Board
- promote safety and educate the public and government officials on the need for manufacturing, maintenance, and repair standards
- operate an international pressure relief testing laboratory
- provide a repository of Manufacturers’ Data Reports
- investigate pressure equipment accidents and issues involving code compliance
The NBIC is updated or re-issued on an annual basis. Additionally, the NBBI provides interpretations to sections of the NBIC in response to properly submitted questions. Interpretations are made available to the public. The NBIC is available for purchase in hard copy or electronic formats.
