Title
Hydrodynamic Coefficients for Cylinders with Pronounced Marine Growths

Abstract

Vertical cylinders in waves experience a different flow regime than horizontal cylinders. The wake from the water motion is constantly being washed back and forth onto the vertical cylinder in an oscillatory way. For a horizontal cylinder, with the axis parallel to the wave crests, the wake is rotated about-the cylinder and its intensity is nearly constant in deep water waves. Because of the different flow regimes, it is anticipated that the force transfer coefficients for the Morison equation would be different for the vertical vs. the horizontal cylinder cases. Therefore, wave experiments were made on a smooth, sand roughened and artificially marine roughened vertical cylinder for comparing cd and Cm values with those for the horizontal orientation. The results showed a strong increase in both the drag and inertia coefficients for the vertical cylinder in each case except for the drag coefficient for the smooth cylinder, which was equal for the vertical vs. the horizontal conditions.
