NASA NASA-LLIS-0960: Lessons Learned – Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME): Integrated Subsystem Test Bed

Publication Date: May 15, 1995
SDO: NASA: NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration
 DOD Adopted   ANSI Approved Approved

Description of Driving Event:

The SSME components were originally planned to be tested on a "bobtail" engine. To provide integrated testing, which takes into account the component interactions, however it was decided to add a shortened version of the thrust chamber. The shortened version had an area ratio of 35:1 versus the flight configuration requirements of 77.5 to 1. The test engine could throttle to 50% without requiring a vacuum chamber.
