Title
Automotive Electronics Reliability Handbook

SAE International

Publication Date:
Jan 1, 1987

Scope:

There has been an increased need for reliable electronics in automotive applications as a result of a number of factors, including:

(1) The proliferation of complex circuits used in automotive electronics

(2) The tradeoffs between cost and reliability faced by the designer

(3) Competition from foreign manufacturers for quality products

(4) The high cost of customer dissatisfaction

(5) An overall increase in attention to quality and reliability

(6) EPA requirements

(7) Safety

For these reasons, this handbook was designed to provide the automotive electronics community with an understanding of the concepts, principles, and methodologies concerning all aspects of automotive electronic systems reliability engineering.

The handbook is organized as follows:

CHAPTER 2.0: RELIABILITY TERMINOLOGY ASSOCIATED WITH AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRONICS

CHAPTER 3.0: RELIABILITY THEORY

CHAPTER 4.0: RELIABILITY DATA ANALYSIS

CHAPTER 5.0: REGRESSION ANALYSIS

CHAPTER 6.0: RELIABILITY SPECIFICATION AND ALLOCATION

CHAPTER 7.0: RELIABILITY PREDICTION

CHAPTER 8.0: RELIABILITY DESIGN GUIDELINES

CHAPTER 9.0: FMEA, FTA, AND SCA

CHAPTER 10.0: RELIABILITY DEMONSTRATION AND RELIABILITY GROWTH

CHAPTER 11.0: INDEX

The handbook is based upon information from several sources, which are listed at the end of each chapter. Since the military/aerospace industry has the longest history of reliability engineering practices, much of the information was based on such references out of necessity. Although the final products of the automotive industry are vastly different from those of the military and aerospace industries, the underlying principles of reliability are the same.
