Scope:

This manual on shot peening inteneded to be a practical to engineers, designers, and operators in the shop, and points out some of the possibilities and some of the limitations of the process.

Shot peening may be defined as the process of cold working the surface of a structural of machine part by means of a propelled stream of spherical shot. The process is used to improve the fatigue properties of the part, and to retard stress corrosion cracking, by the introduction of compressive stresses in the surface layer.
