Title
Stage 1 - Baseline Analysis Earthquake Analysis Studies for Offshore Stuctures

American Petroleum Institute

Publication Date:
Nov 1, 1980

Scope:

1.0 INTRODUCTION--SCOPE OF WORK

Under sponsorship of the American Petroleum Institute, a baseline seismic analysis of an example offshore drilling platform was performed by procedures consistent with current API RP 2A recommendations [1]. The work included a strength requirement response spectrum analysis, in which modal strain energies were calculated, and a static ductility analysis, in which a seismic force pattern developed from the response spectrum analysis was incrementally applied to produce progressive nonl inear response until the structure model had absorbed at least four times the strength requirement strain energy.

The structure was simulated mathematically and analyzed through computer program INTRA, a nonl inear inelastic finite element program developed by PMB and Woodward-Clyde Consultants during a jointly sponsored oil industry project [2]. The model simulates an eight-legged, 80 conductor template-type structure designed for offshore Southern California. The total height of the decks and jacket is approximately 337 feet (water depth 265 feet).

The work documented by this report is the first stage of a proposed multi-stage "Earthquake Analytical Studies for Offshore Structures" project. The objective of the project is to provide a basis for evaluating and improving current earthquake design guidelines with particular emphasis on platform capacity and ductility requirements.
