SUMMARY
This report describes research performed at Texas A&M University
for the American Petroleum Institute (API) to investigate sand erosion
in oil and gas production equipment. It is based on results of a
literature survey, an industry questionnaire, personal interviews with
oil company representatives concerning sand erosion problems, and
laboratory tests to simulate sand erosion in the field for typical
pipe fittings. Data from the laboratory tests of dry sand flowing in
air are compared for various fittings, sand concentrations, and flow
velocities. Conclusions are presented which should assist the designer
in providing piping systems with increased erosion resistance.
