The International Union of Railways (UIC) published a technical document, Leaflet 556 on information transmission systems in trains, describing what is known as the "train bus." The international provisions outlined in the document are designed to promote interoperability, improve operating conditions and enhance the service quality of passenger rail traffic.
The document was produced by information system experts from UIC member railways and the rail industry. The work was coordinated by German railways (DB - Deutsche Bahn) which chairs the UIC Train Bus Steering Committee.
The group defined complex technical provisions for a standard international information transmission system in trains, geared toward railway interoperability. The UIC is promoting the use of the system in European passenger trains.
The train bus is used to transmit information of all types from any vehicle of a train (or multiple-unit in passenger service) to one or more other vehicles of the same train.
The bus is designed to:
- Improve traffic fluidity by increasing and varying remote-control possibilities.
- Facilitate the work of operating staff.
- Improve the safety of passenger traffic.
- Provide additional options for passenger traffic such as:
- Automatic brake testing.
- Information and services for passengers.
- Diagnostic techniques outside the vehicle itself.
- Energy savings.
The technical provisions establishing the data transfer equipment for coaches used in international traffic may also be applied to other passenger rolling stock, driving trailers, traction vehicles and multiple units, according to the UIC.
