The Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) X12 collaborated with GS1 to develop a cross-industry implementation guideline relating to electronic data interchange over the Internet (EDIINT).
These implementation guidelines provide for the delivery of EDI or eXtensible Markup Language (XML) data or any other electronic commerce messages using Internet transport such as payments, electronic patient records and other Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) transaction requirements.
The guideline is designed to define communications methods that may be used to transfer electronic messages and data between companies, according to ASC X12.
Although they were developed to support direct trading partner transmissions, they may also be used with value-added networks (VANs), eMarketplaces or exchanges.
This implementation guide provides detailed information to:
- A comprehensive "cross-industry" guide to recommend the parameters and settings in software compliant to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards of EDIINT The Applicability Statements - AS1, AS2 and AS3.
- Provide information to industry groups seeking recommended parameters and settings in EDIINT software that will optimize their industry's specific and unique needs for efficiency, reliability and security in electronic commerce message transport.
- Specify a minimum set of settings and parameters in EDIINT compliant software that will not compromise "cross-industry" needs in reliable messaging with an emphasis on proper security achieving messaging privacy, authentication, integrity and non-repudiation of origin and receipt.
- Specify decision criteria in choosing the appropriate protocol (between AS1, AS2, AS3) to implement in a given selected industry and trading partner scenarios.
