ASTM International issued a standard, which is designed to provide a "definable quality" specification for producers and consumers of secondary Prime Western Grade zinc metal.
ASTM WK16399 - Specification for Prime Western Zinc Metal Produced from Recycled Zinc Secondary Material is being developed by Subcommittee B02.04 on Zinc and Cadmium, which is part of ASTM International Committee B02 on Nonferrous Metals and Alloys.
According to Larry Parkinson, retired president, Interamerican Zinc Inc. and secretary, Committee B02, Prime Western Grade zinc produced by recycling zinc secondary materials is not covered by other ASTM B02.04 standards such as ASTM B 6 - Specification for Zinc and ASTM B 852 - Specification for Continuous Galvanizing Grade (CGG) Zinc Alloys for Hot-Dip Galvanizing of Sheet Steel.
Consumers of this type of zinc include fabrication hot-dip galvanizers who produce products such as guardrails, electric poles, pipes and beams.
