The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) published a new guide on the vocabulary of metrology - the science of measurement and its application.
ISO/IEC Guide 99:2007, International vocabulary of metrology - Basic and general concepts and associated terms (VIM), which is an English-French publication, focuses on the concepts and terms used in various approaches to measurement.
ISO/IEC Guide 99 cancels and replaces the second edition of the International vocabulary of basic and general terms in metrology (VIM).
The new guide is equivalent to the third edition of the VIM, ISO and IEC said.
According to the organizations, in metrology, concepts and terms such as measurement result, measurement error and measurement uncertainty need to be agreed upon if they are to be used consistently.
The need to cover measurements in chemistry and laboratory medicine for the first time, as well as to incorporate concepts such as those relating to metrological traceability, measurement uncertainty and nominal properties led to this third edition, ISO and IEC said.
ISO/IEC Guide 99 acknowledges that there is no fundamental difference in the basic principles of measurement in physics, chemistry, laboratory medicine, biology or engineering.
According to ISO and IEC, the guide also seeks to meet conceptual needs of measurement in fields such as biochemistry, food science, forensic science and molecular biology.
