CEN Publishes Standard on Magnetic Toys

On April 8, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) published an update to the CEN EN 71-1 standard to include the specific risks related to small magnets in toys.
The revision, which falls under Directive 88/378/EEC on toy safety, follows a high number of incidents and complaints regarding the safety of magnets in toys.
The amendment (A8) contains requirements that are intended to address the hazards associated with ingestion of strong magnets - for example, neodymium iron boron type magnets - that are capable of causing intestinal perforation or blockage.
These hazards are additional to those associated with small parts such as suffocation or asphyxiation. The requirements apply regardless of the intended age of the user.
CEN EN 71-1 already specifies requirements for packaging, marking, and labeling toys.
