The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC), a new American National Standards Institute (ANSI) organizational member, and the Disaster Recovery Institute International (DRII) submitted applications to become ANSI Accredited standards developers.
The CRRC also seeks approval for its CRRC Rating Program. The Cool Roof Rating Council was created in 1998 to develop "accurate and credible" methods for evaluating and labeling the solar reflectance and thermal emittance ( radiative properties) of roofing products and to disseminate the information to all interested parties.
The CRRC Rated Products Directory helps interested parties such as building code bodies, energy service providers, architects and specifiers to find roofing products that are more energy efficient and environmentally friendly, ANSI said
The CRRC is incorporated as a nonprofit educational organization for the following purposes:
- To implement and communicate fair, accurate and credible radiative energy performance rating systems for roof surfaces.
- To support research into energy related radiative properties of roofing surfaces including durability of those properties.
- To provide education and objective support to parties interested in understanding and comparing various roofing options.
The CRRC has four committees reporting to the council's elected board of directors. Each of those committees may have specific subcommittees or task forces to work on individual projects. The CRRC committees include:
- Membership & outreach committee is focused on educating and informing the public and end-users surrounding council activities, the CRRC Product Rating Program and use of the CRRC label.
- Technical committee is charged with understanding and resolving core science and technical issues such as standard ASTM methods, round-robin testing programs for accredited laboratories and weathering test farm protocols.
- Ratings, codes and standards committee is a liaison to local, state and national code bodies and decision-makers interested in understanding and using the CRRC Product Rating System in energy codes, energy efficiency initiatives and incentive/rebate programs.
- Nominating committee is involved in recruitment for committee participation including technical and ANSI consensus body.
Disaster Recovery Institute International (DRII)
With the aim of creating a shared base of knowledge in risk management, DRII administers educational and certification programs for individuals who are engaged in the practice of contingency planning and risk control.
The standards developed by DRII will cover guidelines and procedures to be used by business continuity professionals. DRII's goals are to:
- Promote a base of common knowledge for the business continuity planning/disaster recovery industry through education, assistance and publication of the standard resource base.
- Certify qualified individuals in the discipline.
In 1997 DRII published the Professional Practices for Business Continuity Planners. Developed by experts in business continuity/disaster recovery planning and education, the document was designed to provide a standard resource base outlining the experience required by professionals in the field.
Each subject area in the current Professional Practices contains a description, the professional's role within the area and an outline of recommended knowledge within the subject area. The 10 subject areas cover topics such as:
- Project initiation and management.
- Risk evaluation and control.
- Business impact analysis.
- Developing business continuity strategies.
- Emergency response and operations.
- Developing and implementing business continuity plans.
- Awareness programs and training.
- Maintaining and exercising the business continuity plans.
- Crisis communications.
- Coordination with external agencies.
Comments to the CRRC and DRII should be submitted by Jan. 14, 2008 with a copy to Jim Thompson, the recording secretary of ANSI's Executive Standards Council at Jthompso@ansi.org.
