Certification to ISO 9001 for quality management and to ISO 14001 for environmental management increased during 2006 by 16%, according to an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) survey.

During the same period, certification to more recent ISO management system standards for the automotive sector including ISO/technical specification (TS) 16949 and the medical device sector, ISO 13485, increased by more than 60%, according to the survey.

These are among the findings of The ISO Survey - 2006, which also covered the new ISO/International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 27001 standard for information security management systems and revealed that nearly 5,800 certificates of conformity to the standard were issued in 64 countries.

According to ISO, the survey reveals how ISO management system standards are integrated as tools for the following objectives:

  • Providing assurance about quality in supplier-customer relationships.
  • Operating in an environmentally sustainable manner.
  • Unifying quality, environmental or information security requirements in sectors and areas of activity.
  • Qualifying suppliers in global supply chains.
  • Providing technical support for regulators.
  • Giving organizations in developing countries and transition economies a framework for participating in global supply chains, export trade and business process outsourcing.
  • Assisting in the economic progress of developing countries and transition economies.
  • Transferring good managerial practice.
  • Encouraging the rise of services.

Results of The ISO Survey - 2006 include:

ISO 9001:2000
ISO 9001:2000, which gives the requirements for quality management systems, provides assurance about the ability to satisfy quality requirements and to enhance customer satisfaction in supplier-customer relationships, according to the survey.

Up to the end of 2006, approximately 897,866 ISO 9001:2000 certificates were issued in 170 countries and economies. The 2006 total represents an increase of 123,999 (+16%) over 2005 when the total was 773,867 in 161 countries and economies. Organizations providing services accounted for 32,8% of all ISO 9001:2000 certificates issued up to the end of 2006, according to the survey.

ISO 14001:2004
ISO 14001:2004 provides the requirements for environmental management systems and is designed to help organizations operate in an environmentally sustainable manner, said ISO.

Service providers accounted for 27% of all ISO 14001:2004 certificates issued up to the end of 2006.

ISO/TS 16949:2002
ISO/TS 16949:2002 provides the requirements for the application of ISO 9001:2000 by suppliers in the automotive sector. By the end of 2006, approximately 27,999 ISO/TS 16949:2002 certificates were issued in 78 countries and economies, according to the survey. The 2006 total represents an increase of 10,952 (+ 64%) over 2005 when the total was 17,047 certificates in 80 countries and economies.

ISO 13485:2003
ISO 13485:2003 gives quality management requirements for the medical device sector for regulatory purposes. Up to the end of December 2006, approximately 8,175 ISO 13485:2003 certificates were issued in 82 countries and economies, according to the survey. The 2006 total represents an increase of 3,110 (+ 61%) over 2005 when the total was 5,065 in 67 countries and economies.

ISO/IEC 27001:2005
ISO/IEC 27001:2005, which gives the requirements for information security management systems, was included in the survey for the first time, said ISO. Up to the end of 2006, at least 5,797 ISO/IEC 27001:2005 certificates were issued in 64 countries and economies, according to the survey.
