The Aircraft Noise and Structural Dynamics Group has just issued a new ESDU Item on predicting combustor noise from gas turbine engines. The new Item is based on the semi-empirical SAE method but contains a computer program that makes it easy for the user to estimate noise levels.

Combustor noise levels are estimated in one-third octave bands for an engine that may be either static or flying. For a moving source, appropriate Doppler corrections are made automatically for both amplitude and frequency.

The main input parameters that need to be specified are the mass flowrate through the engine core, the combustor inlet total pressure, the total temperature rise across the combustor and the total temperature fall across the turbine system at the maximum take-off condition.
