A.J. Barrett obituary

The ESDU Physical Data, Chemical Engineering Series is now available online at www.ihsesdu.com. It is the most reliable source of correlated data available for the physical properties of a wide range of pure compounds, and some mixtures, used in a wide range of industries from petrochemical to aerospace.

All ESDU Physical Properties Data are developed, initially in draft Data Sheet form, by leading experts in the field of thermophysical properties, under the guidance of ESDU’s Physical Properties Committee. This international Committee consists of experts drawn from industry, national laboratories, physical property standards institutes and universities. Its function is to evaluate critically and amend all data submitted to it for approval. The ESDU Physical Data Series is unique in that all data in the Series must be validated and endorsed by the Committee before they can be released. The validated data are based on the most reliable experimental data, both reported in the scientific literature and as communications to ESDU.

Increasingly stringent safety and efficiency requirements worldwide dictate that the most reliable, quality-assured, traceable data be used in engineering design; often these are ESDU data. Quality assurance is secured through the correlating or fitting procedures adopted and traceability through the numerous references to the academic, scientific, and technical literature.

The data are given in both document form (pdf) in the extensive Physical Data Series and (from early 2007) as an interactive web service where the user interrogates the entire database to return validated temperature-property values online.
