IEEE Develops Standards for Railway Passenger Information - IEEE P1477, Wireless Payments in Vehicular Environments - IEEE P1609.11

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is developing two vehicular technology standards projects.
IEEE P1477
- Standard for Passenger Information System for Rail Transit Vehicles will revise the 1998 version of the standard to include details on including video as a portion of rail transit passenger information.
IEEE P1609.11
- Standard for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (WAVE) - Over-the-Air Data Exchange Protocol for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) will specify the application service layer and profile for payment and identity authentication and payment data transfer for dedicated short range communication-based applications in WAVE.
The standard will address the need for industry to overcome the limits of existing electronic payment systems, which are not interoperable because of the different over-the-air data exchange protocols in use, according to the IEEE.
