3. Homeland Security Standards Panel (HSSP) Established

In November 2002, President Bush signed H.R 5005 the Homeland Security Act of 2002, creating the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Directorate of Emergency Preparedness and Response (DEPR). In January 2003, a report for Congress titled Homeland Security: Standards for State and Local Preparedness prompted the establishment of the Homeland Security Standards Panel (HSSP). The HSSP, formed by ANSI, will facilitate the standardization efforts between public and private sectors and will also identify and communicate to governmental units the existence of current standards that can meet urgent needs.

4. Tips on Using Adobe Acrobat Reader

Many of the standards documents in the IHS collection are published with two columns of text across the page, in newspaper format, making the ability to highlight and select text difficult. Did you know . . .

• If you have Adobe Acrobat Reader(R) version 5.0 or higher, you can use the Column Select Tool in Acrobat Reader, to highlight only the column of text you want.
• You can select columns of text within a PDF formatted document for copying and pasting into other applications (subject to copyright fair use).

5. HAYSTACK Enhancements Save Time and Make Your Job Easier

Flexible report tailoring, new search options designed to speed acquisition, and more informative results lists have recently been added to the HAYSTACK web-based service. Navy users will be particularly happy with the report tailoring function since it allows them to print APL and AEL data in the popular "Microfiche Wide" format in either HTML or PDF.
