1. Spotlight: The Next Generation of Content Delivery, by Ernesto Ramirez, IHS Senior Vice President, Worldwide Marketing, IHS

Over the years, our goal of making technical information easily accessible for our customers has led us to find new and innovative ways of delivering information. As we look ahead, we know it is no longer enough for our customers to access information. They need to be able to incorporate information into their processes and use it to guide their operations. As the leading distributor of technical standards and specifications, we believe it is up to us to help make this happen. Our method? Content integration.

With content integration, we are not just focusing on delivering information, but are looking at the ways in which our customers can integrate our partners' data into their daily operations. It means making information available to those who need it, when and where they need it. In doing so, we are helping our customers become more efficient, and more likely to use standards and specifications regularly throughout their enterprise.

We believe content integration will make a big difference in how our customers operate and interact with data. That's why we're developing two solutions to support it: packaged software integration and knowledge management portals.

With the IHS packaged software integration solution, users will be able to import information to populate the application they are working on or to search for data they need, all from inside the applications they are using, rather than exiting them to search for that information. This saves time by streamlining users' workflow processes, and increases productivity throughout the organization.

The knowledge management portal solution goes a step further. Like the packaged software integration solution, it allows users to bring information directly into their applications. Just as importantly, it facilitates collaboration. This makes it easier for users to share information, no matter where they are located, whether they work on the same floor or at different locations thousands of miles apart.

2. New Product: Parts Obsolescence Management Solutions Now Available!

The PROBLEM: Locating and sourcing replacements for obsolete and aging parts in aerospace, defense, marine, and MRO industries. A fundamental challenge for these industries is that many products, such as aircraft, last longer than the parts that comprise them - sometimes much longer. These systems are often 10, 15, 20 or more years old, and when it comes time to replace parts, they are often unavailable. This decreased component availability is also known as DMSMS, or Diminishing Manufacturing Sources & Material Shortages.

Why are these parts unavailable? In addition to the extended service life of these systems, the problem is compounded by the fact that the aerospace, defense, and marine industries typically have very long development lead times. (As opposed to, for example, the consumer electronics sector where products are born and die in a couple of years.) Couple that with these industries perhaps being only a very small portion of the component manufacturers' total market, and suppliers cannot justify continued production of a component for the relatively small quantities that would be needed.

The SOLUTION: Effective parts obsolescence management options. Now when parts are needed, it can be quickly determined if the original components are still available, identify replacement options and locate suppliers, lifecycle projections on how long an item will remain available, and whether it's possible to receive early warning when components are discontinued.

solution are the parts data sources for technical and supply chain information, which IHS has included in its Parts Obsolescence program (Level 1). This packaged solution of content and tools for obsolescence management includes three world class databases - HAYSTACK®, CAPS Expert™, and Inventory Locator Service™ (ILS, through an alliance with IHS) - to provide a strong baseline of critical information and tools for obsolescence management. These decision-support tools are the first critical step to finding alternatives for obsolete parts across numerous databases and vendors, and lay the important content foundation for a larger, enterprise-wide Parts Obsolescence Management solution.

For more information on the IHS Parts Obsolescence Management solution, please contact your IHS Representative or call IHS Customer Service at 800-447-3352 (USA/Canada) or 303-397-2295 (Worldwide).

3. Perspectives: New Solutions on the Horizon for Aviation/Aerospace Customers, by Mark Brown, Director, Aviation/Aerospace Industry, IHS

The aviation/aerospace industry has changed dramatically over the past few years. Cost-cutting concerns and an emphasis on collaboration are creating new demands on how standards and specifications are used throughout the industry. We are working hard to create solutions that will meet these needs.

A large area of concern for many companies is cost. Many aren't just cutting their own costs, but also are driving cost-cutting initiatives to their suppliers as well. There are good reasons for this; for example, it's been estimated that more than half the cost for large aviation and aerospace companies is coming from their supply chains. That's why we are focusing our efforts on delivering better value to our customers, so that they can use our products to manage their supply chains more effectively and cut costs.

A key initiative in this area is content integration. As discussed in the article, "The Next Generation of Content Delivery," content integration allows companies to use information more effectively throughout their enterprise, improving workflow and productivity. To support this, we will be rolling out an aviation/aerospace portal later this year. Based on industry-leading portal technology, this portal will give users access to much of the information they need to perform their jobs. It will include features such as:

  • Integrated database search of IHS subscription and company proprietary data

  • Access to the IHS online store to purchase standards

  • Integrated parts search across IHS subscriptions

  • Industry news feeds

  • Links to industry publications

The portal will act as a collaboration tool to link together companies throughout the supply chain by providing them with access to the same information. By doing so, the solution will help our customers significantly cut costs from the entire production cycle, from bidding through product delivery.

Of course, portals are not new to this industry segment. Major aviation and aerospace OEMs already have their own portals for their suppliers and customers. That’s why IHS offers Web services, allowing companies to incorporate IHS standards and specification databases into their own portals. In addition, companies will have the option of creating and branding their own portals and integrating specific databases to meet their needs.

Portals will also support the increasing need for collaboration in the industry. As more companies work together on projects, they need tools that allow them to share information. The IHS aviation/aerospace portal will provide our customers with a secure environment that will make it easier for users to access the information they need to perform their jobs and collaborate on projects.

Another initiative underway is an enhancement to our parts management system. In March, we launched a new fasteners database, which allows users to do part and parametric searches for standard fasteners from industry and military standards across multiple commodities, such as bolts, screws, studs, rivets, and washers. This database will help our customers significantly reduce the time it takes them to find the information they need for work supporting research and development, design, and procurement functions. We are monitoring use of the database to track what information is most frequently accessed, and will be adding content on an ongoing basis.

After closely observing industry trends, we have also begun offering custom collections. This allows us to provide customers with a customer-specified collection of standards, as permitted by our agreements with our SDO and content partners. Our custom collection solution assists smaller companies who do not need an entire set of standards to acquire only the standards they need. We believe this helps prevent companies from illegally acquiring copies of standards while allowing us to build effective, long-term relationships with small, growing organizations. Just as importantly, it gives us yet another way to distribute our partners' standards to those customers who need them.

4. IHS Delivers HAZMAT Solutions for RoHS and WEEE Directive Compliance

IHS recognizes the urgent need for access to Hazardous Materials/Substance (HAZMAT) data, especially as it applies to the impending European Union (EU) Restriction of Hazardous Substance (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directives that require producers to recycle and dispose of RoHS violating products. With compliance deadlines in 2006 fast approaching, IHS now provides a comprehensive solution for HAZMAT data, addressing these directives to ease compliance for producers and manufacturers.

IHS collects and standardizes HAZMAT data according to a customer's specific requirements and compliance obligations, such as those cited in the EU RoHS/WEEE directives, in addition to other safety and regulatory requirements. IHS also provides services and software for integration into enterprise/parts management applications and ongoing maintenance systems. Supporting these solutions, IHS will provide a HAZMAT information database available to current and future customers.

IHS and RoHS/WEEE Compliance
Only IHS has the technical information management expertise and content foundation to support a comprehensive HAZMAT and RoHS/WEEE compliance solution providing up-to-date data and guidelines. The industry leader in compliance and standards document management, IHS has converted and aggregated hundreds of thousands of manufacturer catalogs, and over 120 million part records, including parametric electronic component and fasteners data, government logistics data and product catalog data across all major commodities. IHS has longstanding relationships with thousands of manufacturers, some over 40 years, for acquiring and updating critical parts and product content.

The EU RoHS/WEEE deadlines are fast approaching and you can't afford to wait. Please contact your IHS Representative or call IHS Customer Service at 800-447-3352 (USA/Canada) or 303-397-2295 (Worldwide) for more information, or to schedule a free opportunity analysis.

7. Remote Access Printing (RAP) Expanded with New SDO Content

Global Engineering Documents(R), the retail arm of IHS, has expanded its hardcopy document delivery system. Remote Access Printing (RAP) system delivers 'hardcopy' documents immediately to your desktop via email. Now, instead of having to wait several days for a document to be delivered by a freight company, RAP sends a PDF format file that is printed at your location.

Effective immediately, new SDO content from AGMA, AIA/NAS, CEA, ECA, EIA, GEIA, JEDEC, and TIA standards is available via Remote Access Printing - RAP. These SDOs add to the current IHS portfolio including ASME, ASTM, API, AWS, NEMA, IEC, and ISO.

What are the advantages of RAP delivery?

  • Immediate delivery of hardcopy documents for engineers' time sensitive projects, versus waiting several days for carrier-based hardcopy delivery

  • No freight/shipping/postage charges either in the US or internationally, resulting in immediate cost savings for your company and the end user of the documents

  • Immediate delivery of vital documents that may not be available for electronic delivery. This ensures you will have the correct information when you need it

  • Hardcopy documents, delivered via RAP, may be stored in a corporate library or shared with colleagues (subject to copyright law)

RAP delivery can be used on any Windows computer (Windows 95 or higher) with Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader (v4.0 minimum).
