1. MANAGING RISK WORLDWIDE WITH DET NORSKE VERITAS (DNV)

Managing risk means reducing uncertainties involved in decision-making and preparing for all business eventualities. Headquartered in Oslo, Norway, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) is an independent foundation with the objective of safeguarding life, property, and the environment by providing three categories of service: classification, certification and consultancy. DNV has been a ship classification society since 1864, and is recognized as a leader in today's global classification market and an international provider of services for managing risk.

DNV standards provide guidance on key factors, which DNV considers to be the core compliance issues for owners and operators of classified offshore units for safety, compliance, and avoidance of any unnecessary duplication of work. Offshore compliance requires that the design, construction, and operation of offshore units be safe.

IHS DNV standards service offers the specifications, standards, and recommended practices that you need for compliance.

To learn more about the IHS DNV standards service, visit http://engineers.ihs.com/products/standards/index.jsp or call 1-800-716-3447 (USA/Canada) or 1-303-397-2896 (Worldwide).

2. LOST IN THE TRANSLATION . . .

International Guidelines Developed to Upgrade Quality of Foreign Language Translations

Translation is not an exact science. Substituting a word in one language for a word in another can be a challenge, as the concept represented therein may not be equivalent across cultures. To aid professional translators in their quest to produce high quality texts, a new international standard has been issued to increase the reliability of translation services.

Here are a few of examples of how some American product advertising was communicated in various foreign languages or just "lost in the translation."

* Attempts to sell Chevy Nova cars in Spanish speaking countries failed miserably. "No Va" means "It Does Not Go" in Spanish.

* When Pepsi first started marketing its products in China a few years ago, they translated their slogan

"Pepsi Brings You Back to Life" very literal. However, the slogan in Chinese really meant "Pepsi Brings Your Ancestors Back from the Grave." How's that for a rejuvenating drink?

* Clairol's "Mist Stick" curling iron was considered a useless product when introduced into the German market. "Mist" is German for manure. Not too many people had use for a "manure stick."

* An American T-shirt maker in Miami printed shirts, which promoted the Pope's visit, for the Spanish market. Instead of "I saw the Pope" (el Papa); the shirts read, "I saw the potato" (la papa).

Help is on the way to prevent misinterpretations and to accurately portray products and messages that a company "wants" to communicate. The International Standards Organization (ISO), along with other language resource organizations, has developed the standard ISO 12616 Translation-oriented Terminology to help facilitate translations across foreign cultures.

IHS offers the full collection of ISO standards. To view the standards available, visit http://www.ihs.com/index.jsp or call 1-800-716-3447 (USA/Canada) or 1-303-397-2896 (Worldwide).
