3. IHS Parts Management Solutions for Environmental Compliance
Emerging environmental regulations will be requiring manufacturers/producers to restrict or eliminate hazardous substances in their products. These regulations are in response to growing concerns of hazardous materials in products - particularly electronics - that are being bought, used, and disposed of by the millions. Hazardous substances (such as lead, mercury, cadmium, PBB and PBDE flame retardants) are contributing to a growing waste problem from discarded products.
In addition to safety concerns, producers are scrambling to comply with a growing number of directives and standards from regulatory authorities around the world. Examples include the European Union's Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directives, the California Electronics Waste Recycling Act, the End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) directive, and the Japan Green Survey Standardization Initiative (JGPSSI). Most of these directives require producers to monitor and report hazardous substances in their products, restrict or eliminate these substances, and ensure environmentally safe disposal or recycling.
The implications of non-compliance can be huge, affecting every department in the organization. There are regulatory implications in terms of penalties, significant loss of revenue and market share due to sales/export restrictions, marketing and public relations nightmares (e.g., safety concerns and recalls), and design and manufacturability issues in converting products to become "environmentally friendly."
Problem Solved: producers and their suppliers typically do not have the hazardous materials (HAZMAT) information needed for their products, at least not in the form and detail required. Furthermore, they don't have the other key pieces of information (such as technical and manufacturability parameters) needed to redesign their products. This is where IHS steps in with its comprehensive solution for environmental compliance, including risk assessment services to identify and quantify the business impact of hazardous substances in products and designs. IHS collects and standardizes the technical, material, and manufacturability data required to ensure compliance and support redesign. IHS also provides the content management tools and services for integration into enterprise/parts management applications, and ongoing content maintenance.

4. SAE Historical Standards Now Available, Exclusively Through IHS!
IHS and SAE International recently announced that IHS will become the exclusive distributor of SAE Historical Aerospace Standards and SAE Historical Ground Vehicle Standards via online or DVD subscriptions. This collaboration enables improved access to these mission-critical standards and material specifications- available immediately for the first time in electronic format.
Primary customer benefits of making SAE Historical Standards available electronically include safety & compliance, maintenance & repair, parts optimization & procurement, and regulatory & training issues. Aerospace companies, for example, manufacture products that can be in service over a long period of time (20+ years) and they have a responsibility to maintain the associated data for the life of the product. Any standards that were used in the development of an aircraft must remain within the company's records for the product's lifecycle.
The SAE Historical Standards subscription from IHS is continually updated as revised standards are issued and includes instant access to 8,000 SAE standards and material specifications spanning the 1940s to the present. The SAE Historical Standards databases covering Aerospace and Ground Vehicle applications include all cancelled and prior revisions of current documents, and deliver the following customer benefits:
- Advanced search capabilities with clear, easy-to-read search results: Current standards shown first with all revisions listed in reverse chronological order
- Comprehensive bibliographic information with links to full-text PDFs of historical standards
- Easy online access to all historical standards saves time and effort; print-only copies tend to get lost or misplaced
- Find the standard in effect at the time a part, component, system or vehicle was designed
- Ensure that maintenance and repair activities meet the criteria of the standards used for the original design
- Determine how new standards relate to previous design versions
- Link to related standards and documents - old, new, cancelled and revised - from one convenient location
- Access to historical standards helps develop a better-educated, well-informed team of engineers
- Track the historical pathways and evolution of standards, and determine the best strategy to repair or replace the particular part, component, or system
This critical SAE Historical Standards content is not part of the SAE Digital Library, and is only available via the IHS ERC and DVD products. For more information, please contact Debbie.Anderson@IHS.com.
5. ESDU Launches Physical Data, Chemical Engineering Series Online
ESDU is pleased to announce that the first issue of the ESDU Physical Data, Chemical Engineering Series as a complete collection of PDF files is scheduled for inclusion in the first Web release of 2005. 6. Fasteners eCatalog Enables Manufacturing, Government and Defense Operations Worldwide
To significantly improve the research and specification of standard fasteners, IHS developed the Fasteners eCatalog with the workflow of the design engineer in mind. Multiple standard fastener references are combined into a single, part-based research tool, fully indexed by complete standard part numbers as well as by specific parametric details. This also benefits the sourcing function because valid, orderable parts can be referenced and leveraged to easily identify alternates and replacements.
Using the part and parametric searches in the IHS Fasteners eCatalog, you can significantly reduce research time through single-point access to millions of standard fastener parts and the ability to compare parts side-by-side. The system also empowers design engineers to navigate the standards by encapsulating critical attributes in the parametric search engine.
For example, three major defense operations - US Army and US Navy as well as a National Ministry of Defense - currently use the Fasteners eCatalog to support their maintenance and repair operations and new part selection for AIA standard fasteners.

9. Customer Success Story: SAE Digital Library - a Vital Source for Automotive Engineers
More than ever, the need to stay abreast of the most recent engineering developments, both technically and for competitive reasons, is essential for engineers, designers and researchers in every industry. This is very true, of course, at Nissan Motor Co. and in the automobile industry. The SAE Technical Papers published by the Society of Automotive Engineers International (SAE) provide the world’s most up-to-date technological mobility-related data, and are essential for engineers and research scientists involved in designing and manufacturing automobiles.
However, the volume of SAE Technical Papers that have been published thus far is enormous. If you were to file them all in your office it would be necessary to double the space just to sit down, so keeping paper copies of all the SAE Technical Papers in each individual office presents obstacles.
We asked Nissan Motor Co. about the positive outcomes this service has delivered to its business. Read the entire case study at http://auto.ihs.com/engineering/case-studies/index.jsp .
